Thiel, Leroy C., 88, New Florence died peacefully in his home October 14, 2011. Born September 2, 1923 in Johnstown son of the late Frank Sr. and Edith (McManus) Thiel. Also preceded in death by wife, Dorothy Jean (Duncan) Thiel in February 2010, to whom he was married 63 years; brother Frank Thiel Jr.; sisters Agnes Smith and Rosemarie Wagner. Survived by daughter Nancy Banks and husband Sam, Annandale, VA; granddaughter Christina Jean Beverage and husband Jason and great-granddaughter Emmy Jean all of New York City; brothers Louis, Harry, Glenn Herbert and Lester Thiel and sister Dorothy Tangel and numerous nieces and nephews. Leroy retired from Bethlehem Steel Corp, Johnstown Plant having worked there from 1942-1982. He was a corporal in the US Army Air Force during WW II having served in the Pacific Theater from 1943 to 1946 and avid hunter and gardener. Friends received from 2-6 pm Monday at the Kenneth A. Stuart Funeral Home, 139 Ligonier Street, New Florence where services will be held 11 am Tuesday. Private interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Laurel Valley Ambulance Service, 174 13th Street, New Florence, PA 15944. Military rite by local veterans organization.
